SCOTUS to Hear Apple v. Samsung Patent Case

SCOTUSAppleSam

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) announced this morning that they will hear part of the patent dispute between Apple and Samsung. The order, published on the Supreme Court web site, limits the hearing by SCOTUS though to only the second of two questions presented. Samsung filed the request back on December 14th as part of the ongoing multi-pronged battle between the two corporations that has spanned multiple court cases since 2011. The case has been long followed by tech giants, fans of both manufacturers and patent litigation analysts for indications of how patent law and the products themselves may be affected by the outcome of these cases.

Samsung’s official response to the news:

“We welcome the Court’s decision to hear our case. We thank the many large technology companies, 37 intellectual property professors, and several groups representing small business, which have supported our position.”

Samsung also won an appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals against Apple last month. The judgement in that case, separate from the one being heard by the Supreme Court, essentially removed a $120 million judgment in Apple’s favor.
