Sony updates PS Remote Play on Android to support the PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 is right around the corner now, and with it, the next generation of consoles is coming. I’m gonna be honest with you: even with the rise of game streaming services like Google Stadia and Microsoft’s xCloud, I’m still more of a fan of owning my own hardware and playing things locally. And owning your own hardware doesn’t mean that you have to be in front of your console either. With Sony’s PlayStation Remote Play app, you can play all of your favorite games on your console, no matter where you are.

Now, naturally, your PlayStation 5 is coming, possibly sooner rather than later, and if you were a fan of this functionality in the PS4, you’re probably expecting to do it on the PS5 as well. The good news here is that the PS Remote Play app is getting an update that adds support for the PlayStation 5. This means that you’ll be able to play your library of games, no matter whether you’re actually in front of your console or not, as long as you have a stable and usable Wi-Fi connection. The app shows you the console’s display output and gives you touch buttons so you can play right from your phone (or, if you have a controller in hand, you can use that too). That is, of course, when your console arrives.

There’s also a couple of other changes. The full changelog goes as follows:

  • You can now connect to a PlayStation 5 console using Remote Play.
  • Screen designs have been updated.
  • Button assignments made on PS4 or PS5 can now be used in Remote Play.
  • Supported version has changed to 7.0 or later.

So if you have a PS5 pre-order placed and you would like to have this functionality when you finally receive your console, then be sure to update the app (or download it if you don’t have it already) before you do.
